Chapter History
Caring for Our Own & Caring for Kids
In 1981, the Houston Chapter of the NFL Alumni was formed to raise funds for children-related charities and former NFL players that had fallen on hard times. The organization’s national motto was "Caring for Kids”. The first chapter president was former Oilers quarterback Pete Beathard. Ensuing chapter presidents included former Oilers/Jets guard Bob Talamini, Broncos center Bobby Maples, Oilers quarterback Don Trull, Cardinals center Chuck Brown and Oilers/Saints offensive lineman David Carter, the current chapter president.
Charity Golf Classic
Throughout the years, the chapter has hosted golf tournaments as part of the NFL Alumni Charity Golf Classic Tour, a national initiative that raises money for youth-related causes. The Houston Chapter’s tournaments have raised well over $1.5 million for their beneficiaries. Some of them include Be An Angel, Bo’s Place, American Cancer Society, Leukemia Society, Children’s Assessment Center, The Blue Bird Circle, and Texas Children’s Hospital. Our current charity partner is the Shriner's Hospitals for Children, both the Houston and Galveston branches.
The tournaments have been held at some of the finest courses in our area, such as Champions, The Woodlands, Sweetwater C.C., Falcon Point, Southwyck C.C., Wildcat Golf Course Redstone’s Tournament Course, and Sugar Creek Country Club.
The winning team earns an all-expense paid trip to the NFL Alumni's Super Bowl of Golf (SBOG) to compete for the mythic national championship against winning teams from each stop on the NFL Alumni Charity Golf Tour.
Additionally the Houston Chapter has held fund-raising events such as Sporting Clays, Motorcycle Rally and 5K Run.
